This I believe
Often times in our lives we face many different kinds of situations that we just cannot understand or believe. When this happens, many people try to convince themselves that they could not do anything about it, that it was all a destiny. Destiny means that the past, present and future was, is, and will be chosen for us. I do not believe in destiny.
I believe in necessity. Necessity means that everything that happens in the world only happens because of certain causes. It may sound similar to destiny. However they are completely different from each other in a sense that destiny has only one result no matter what we do, whereas necessity means that one action has the possibility to change everything. An example of destiny would be like math; two plus two is four, no matter what we do. Fortunately, most things in real life don’t follow the same pattern for every single occasion. I believe that every decision we make are the ones that changes our consequences. William Bryan once quoted, "Destiny is no matter of chance. It is a matter of choice: It is not a thing to be waited for, it is a thing to be achieved." Therefore, only thing that we know for sure is that for those who condemn (Thesaurus)destiny for bad results, positive consequences will never follow.
In a nutshell, I believe that we should keep in our mind that we are responsible for whatever happens as a result of our past actions. It is true that sometimes in life, we encounter some events that just do not seem fair. However, instead of blaming the results on destiny right away, we should learn to get over them and try harder, so that we can recieve better results next time.
Self assessment:
1. When I first planned the essay, it was planned to be 4 paragraph essay, so I had to stuff all the points in one paragraph
2. I felt that the conclusion was weak, it might have been better if I used the quote in conclusion instead.
3. I used the word "condemn" as a thesaurus, and I was not sure if it was suitable for that sentence

Essay 22
There are many things in this world that are disrespected and called names just because everyone says that they are ugly and pointless. For example, some animals and insects such as rats, skunks, spiders and snakes tend to be ignored and looked down upon by many people. However, a poet by the name of Naomi Nye and I disagreed with this madness. We believe that everything has its’ own beauty that should be respected.
The poem, “Valentine for earnest man” by Naomi Nye was written as a reply to a man who gave her his address and asked her to write him a poem. From the poem, I could infer that she was complaining about how the man asked for the poem as if he was ordering a taco. The main part of this poem is about a man who thought that skunks were beautiful and gave them to his wife for Valentine’s Day. There is one phrase that is the most important part of this poem. Ms. Nye writes, “Nothing was ugly just because the world said so,” which suggests her idea of everything having its’ own beauty. Also, she added, “He reinvented them as valentines and they became beautiful.” From the two lines of this poem, I thought that she was trying to say that poems cannot be ordered like tacos, but rather be respected by different people with different tastes.
When Ms. Nye showed her strong belief that “nothing is ugly just because the world says so,” I recollected some of the memory I have that made me think the same thing. When I was spending my time in

Friendship
This series of writing is made of for different forms of literature, free-verse poem, expository paragraph, haiku, and picture poem on the topic "Friendship." These are based on the thoughts that I had recently while reading books and watching movies. I hope you like them!
8-sentence expository paragraph
Everyone has a different aspect about friendship. Some people say that friends are the ones we spend the most time together, while some say that friends are the ones that stays with us during hard times. In fact, there have been many quotes by famous people who left their definition about friendship. For instance, one greatly respected Chinese writer said, “Sometimes you put walls up not to keep people out, but to see who cares enough to break them down.” This writer thought that friends are the ones who care about us. Moreover, in the story “Winnie the Pooh,” one of the characters quotes,”If you live to be 100, I hope I live to be 100 minus 1 day, so that I never have to live without you.” The writer of this story thinks that friendship is everything. Again, everyone has a different aspect about friendship. There is no right or wrong answer, and I think that we can truly respect friendship when we can find our own meaning in friendship
Free verse poem
Possibilities
Friendship is like a piece of soft clay
with a gentle touch by the tip of our fingers,
It changes shape,
to its endless possibilities.
With the beating heart and blushing cheek,
it turns into love.
With the comforting words,
it turns into heart-warming medicine.
If we use our own original touch,
friendship will transform
into endless possibilities
Haiku
New start
Cherry blossom blows
The final school year begins
New friendship begins
Picture poem
The Balcony

This is where a young lady stood.
Where Juliet stood.
This is the place where she prayed.
Where she prayed for unfortunate love.
This is where she listened,
and heard the sound of bushes howling.
This is where she looked down,
and saw her only destined love.
This is the place where she waited,
waited for Romeo to climb up a tree to see her.
This is where she promised,
promised her only love to stay with her forever.
This is the one and only balcony.
Where forever lasting friendship in the name of love began.
Self assessment:
1. This was my first time writing a multi-genre essay, so I looked at other students' blogs to get the picture of what I was doing. Therefore, I might be lacking some originality. I will try other techniques later on if I have the chance.
2. This was also my first time writing a haiku, and I used the word "cherry blossoms. " I don't think any of us can understand this. The school year in most Asian countries begin in March, when the cherry blossoms start blowing. I used it to express the beginning of new experience.
3. I had a hard time trying to fit in a writing related to Romeo and Juliet. I managed to somehow use it in the picture poem, but I think some people might find it difficult to feel the same way as I do about endless friendship being love.

Final draft for grade
Family.
There is a saying goes. "Blood is thicker than water." I have been away from the rest of my family ever since I was ten years old. Five years away from my parents and my brother might have weakened our relationship. However, instead of dimming our relationship, we developed a special kind of love between each other. In the book "Romeo and Juliet," I saw a similarity between the bond of Romeo and Juliet and the bond among our family members.
One thing that I really admire about my family is the fact that we are so united. Although this might sound ironical, my family live separately. My father and my younger brother live in Seoul because of the quality of education my brother can get in Seoul. My mom lives in my hometown, Seosan, with my grandmother because she has to take care of the restaurant. Finally, I live in the United States, as you can see. However, our family is always united over time and space. We occasionally live for weeks without calling each other or mailing each other, but we still trust one another to do what they need to do. Without trust, my mom would never have let my dad take full care of my little brother. Without trust, my dad would never have let my mom take full care of our restaurant. Our family might be away physically, but we were, and we will be together no matter where we were.
In the book, "Romeo and Juliet," the main characters show this kind of unity that I admire in my family. Romeo and Juliet are born in families that absolutely despise each other. Nevertheless, they fall in love at first sight. Due to the cold atmosphere between the two families, Romeo and Juliet had no choice but to be apart. However, as my family love and trust each other completely even if we live far away from each other, Romeo and Juliet's love is invincible. In one part of the book, there is a part where Juliet says, "What's in a name? That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet." This shows Juliet's unconditional and unchangeable love toward Romeo. I believe that my family's love for each other is just as inflexible as Romeo and Juliet's love.
My family members might not spend as much time together as other families do. My family members might not have as much conversation as other families do. However, I can firmly declare that our invincible, consistant love and trust toward each other will not lose to any other families; Not even to Romeo and Juliet.
Self assessment:
1. On first draft, I confused Juliet's line with Romeo's, so I think I should research my resources more carefully next time.
2. I still have some trouble trying to use different words for the same meaning. I should use thesaurus more often.
3. I think writing intro and conclusion after the body paragraphs got a little more natural. I believe I will get better as time passes

Essay 19

Final draft
Ever since I got my first ipod 4 years ago, I became really interested in music. I started out with the songs that were popular at that time. However, I realized that these kind of songs' fame only lasts for about three months before they are forgotten. I looked for songs that will remain as my favorite song for a long time and figured that if I knew a story behind a song, I might be able to enjoy the song with more interest. "God knows" is the song that I consider a masterpiece.
"God knows" is a theme song of one of my favorite anime movies by a Japanese singer named Aya Hirano. This song is about a girl that is too unique. Because she was so unique, she always felt lonely and could not even talk to one boy that she liked. This song is really special to me because I also felt lonely because I had such different school life from everyone else. F0r example this one part of the song, "On the lonely rail" reminded me of the time when I had a hard time trying to live in another country without any relatives. Also, I had to transfer to another school every year, which made it hard for me to make close friends. However, this song ends by saying, "I'll follow you, no matter where you are at the darkness of this bitter. Because you will be shining." The lyrics of this song always cheers me up because when I think about it, I always had someone with me.
It seems to me that most modern music is focused too much on exiting beats and popularity. Although those songs are fun to enjoy for the moment, but they cannot be memorable if there is no meaning in them. I want to encourage everyone to recognize the true beauty of having special meanings in songs that we listen to.
Self assessment:
1. I am not used to writing the introduction and conclusion after writing the body paragraphs first, I find it hard to keep the essay consistant.
2 I had some difficulties trying to translate the Japanese lyrics into English because the words and grammer seems to be ignored in some part of the song, but I think I did well on that.
3 I am going to have to work on paraphrasing words and sentences that are repeated multuple times in one essay because it is awkward to see the same phrases over and over again
God Knows - Lyrics [Hirano Aya]
ごめんね, 何もできなくて
痛みを 分かち合う ことさえ
あなたは 許してくれない
無垢に生きるため 振り向かず
背中向けて 去ってしまう God Lonely Day
私, ついて行くよ
どんな辛い 世界の 闇の中でさえ
きっと, あなたは 輝いて
越える 未來の果て, 弱さゆえに
魂, 壞されるように
My Way 重なるよ今
二人に God Bless。
遠向けて 熱くなる 思いは
現實 溶かして さまよう
合いたい 氣持ちに 理由わない
あなたへ あふれ出す Loving you。
せめて, 美しい 夢だけを
描きながら 追いかけよう For Your Lonely Heart
やめて, うそは あなたらしくないよ
目お見て これからのことを 話そう
私, 覺悟してる
暗い 未來だって, 强くなって
運命, 變えられるかもね
My Wish
My Way 重なるよ今

Forgive
Jeffrey C.
4/6/2010
Final Draft.
Forgiveness is an essential part of our lives that all of us have to go through at some point. Even people such as the wise Dumbledore or most respected priests make mistakes. While going through the process of making mistakes and forgiving ourselves and others, we finally get to grow up. It is true that some mistakes influence our lives seriously, but forgiveness can change that memory into a wonderful, positive one.
The character that I think of when I hear the word “Forgiven” is professor Dumbledore of the Harry Potter series. In the most recent book called “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollow,” Harry is looking for what Dumbledore told him. Not long after he starts looking for those items, he happens to read a book about the life of professor Dumbledore. Harry finds out a lot of things that Dumbledore did not tell him when he was alive. Harry gets really mad because he feels betrayed and distrusted. However, I think that Dumbledore should be forgiven because he only hid his past because he did not want Harry to make the same mistakes that he made. Fortunately, Harry gets a chance to talk to Dumbledore when he is in a pinch. Dumbledore apologizes, and Harry forgives Dumbledore for not telling him the truth.
In my lifetime, there was one time when I could not forgive myself. During the summer vacation, I was attending an academy in order to study for the TOEFL exam. However, I was in a really severe mental stress because of the fact that I was stuck in that place, when I should have been spending time with my friends. One day, when I forgot to do my homework, the teacher insulted me and hit me several times with a broomstick until it finally broke into two pieces. Well, all those stress along with the insults and punishment made me explode and take two powerful swings at that teacher. All my friends stopped me before I could do something more dangerous, but I was struck with consciousness and simply could not forgive myself. It wasn’t the fact that I hit the teacher, but it was the fact that I let my parents down a whole lot. Recently, I finally forgave myself, and I changed a whole lot after that incident. I realized that I should not keep on harassing myself for past mistake, but rather try not to make the same mistake ever again.
As long as we have relationships with other people, it is inevitable that we make mistakes. Moreover, one bad mistake could ruin our relationships. However, without forgiveness, we will let those mistakes affect our lives in future relationships. "Forgiveness does not change the past, but it does enlarge the future," said Paul Boese.

True gentleman,
The first person that I think as a true gentleman is a Korean singer known as Rain. He was recently featured in Hollywood movies such as Ninja assassin or speed racer. He is also very successful as a singer too. However, when he was about my age, spending most of his time as an apprentice, he had to go through great sorrow. His mother died of a simple disease that can be cured with a simple operation, but they too poor to pay for the operation. After going through years of backbreaking effort, he finally became one of the most famous singers in Korea. Moreover, because he knew how it felt to be in puberty, he actively participated in voluntary work such as digging wells for African villages or building schools for those children to be educated. I really respect him as a true gentleman because he spent the major part of his money on voluntary service even after he got the money that he longed for such a long period of time.
Another person I respect as a true lady – this person is a woman – is the chief of emergency aid team of “World Vision”, Biya Han. She was born in 1958 and is still working for the emergency aid team. Ever since she was 35, a relatively young age, she started to travel around the world. She participated mainly in voluntary work while she was abroad. In 2001, she became the chief of emergency aid team and accomplished countless trips to countries that required help. Recently, she returned from her 100th trip abroad to Somalia. I believe that she is a true lady because she gave up so many things such as marriage or career in order to help those who are in need. Furthermore, she even risked her life various times by volunteering to work in African cities where war was going on. Because of her free and giving lifestyle, she even earned herself a title, “Daughter of Kaze (Wind).”
There is another saying goes, “The noblest question in the world is, ‘What good may I do in it?’” by Benjamin Franklin. This is the question I ask myself really often when I have a chance to take part in volunteer work. If people start asking themselves this question often, I am sure that more and more people can become a “True gentlemen.”
